The man who charged at Ariana Grande at the Singapore premiere of Wicked: For Good has been sentenced to nine days in jail.
The 32-year-old Hollywood star was rushed at by a 26-year-old Australian man named Johnson Wen on the red carpet. In footage of the incident, Wen is seen jumping the barriers and sprinting toward Grande from across the room before grabbing her shoulders while jumping up and down. Her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo quickly pulled her to safety.
After the incident last Thursday made headlines, many in Singapore called for the arrest and deportation of the man, who reportedly has a history of disrupting concerts and celebrity events. According to multiple reports, Wen has since been found guilty of being a public nuisance and is serving his time in jail.
Wen’s trial was on Monday, according to the BBC. The court heard that he had attempted to intrude on the movie premiere twice, according to reports from Singaporean media.
Moments after he grabbed Grande, Erivo forcibly pried him off, and security staff escorted him out. He then made a second attempt to jump the barricades, but security staff stopped him and pinned him to the ground.
Under Singapore’s laws against public nuisance, Wen could have been sentenced to up to three months in jail, fined up to $2,000 ($1,537), or both.
Grande has not commented on the case, but went on to appear at public events in Los Angeles over the weekend.
Two days after the incident, Erivo appeared to reference it when she spoke about her relationship with Grande while making the movie, saying, “We have come through some stuff in our lives, our daily workings… even this last week, let’s be honest.”
Several of Grande’s fans fumed over the incident and even accused Wen of “re-traumatising” Grande.
The pop star turned actress has previously revealed that she experiences post-traumatic stress disorder after a suicide bomb attack at her May 2017 concert in Manchester. The attack killed 22 people and injured hundreds.
Fans took to a Reddit board that announced Wen’s sentencing to voice their frustration. Several vented their anger that Wen should’ve gotten more time in jail.
One fan said, “Hopefully 9 days in a Singapore jail will be enough for him to stop, but I feel like he will do this again. The fact that he tried to go back a second time should have resulted in a tougher sentence, tbh. If 90 days is the max, he should have received at least 30 days.”
Another replied, “He said he’s stop after he jumped Katy Perry. Then still went on an ran on pitch during the womens football word cup and Paris Olympics. He isn’t going to stop.”
A third added, “With how much of a pattern he has for doing this I really wish he’d have somehow gotten more time because I know he’s just gonna do this again to someone else soon.”
