Martin Short shared heartbreaking details about the tragic loss of his daughter.
On May 10, CBS News Sunday Morning published its online interview with the Only Murders in the Building star. Short, 76, sat down with correspondent Tracy Smith to discuss the death of his adopted daughter, Katherine Short. The actor first reflected on his love of fatherhood before revealing how he mourned his late wife Nancy Dolman, who died in 2010 following her fight with ovarian cancer.
Katherine’s final words mirrored those his wife had spoken to him. This follows the Father of the Bride star being photographed dining publicly with director J.J. Abrams following his daughter’s passing. Meanwhile, the devastating 911 call from Short’s daughter’s death has disclosed tragic new information.
Short became visibly emotional and struggled to contain his grief while discussing the heartbreaking deaths of his daughter and wife. He stated, “You know, it’s been a nightmare for the family, but the understanding that mental health and the cancer my wife had are both diseases.
“And sometimes with diseases, they are terminal, and my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, and other things as well,” he continued. “And did the best she could, until she couldn’t.”, reports the Mirror US.
He then revealed their final words to him, “So Nan’s last words to me were ‘Mart let me go,’ and she was just saying ‘Dad, let me go.'” Katherine’s death certificate, issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, officially confirmed that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Short’s daughter was discovered deceased inside her Hollywood Hills home on February 23, sometime after 6 p.m.
A statement released by Martin’s representative read, “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Martin welcomed Katherine into his family alongside his late wife, Nancy. Katherine resided in Los Angeles, California, where she worked as a social worker. She was also an active participant in the non-profit organization Bring Change 2 Mind, which is dedicated to fostering open conversations about mental health.
Katherine was one of his three children, alongside sons Oliver Patrick and Henry Hayter.
The heartbreaking news emerged while Martin was in the midst of a comedy tour with Steve Martin, featuring multiple U.S. dates that combined sketch comedy, stand-up, and live music.
Following his daughter’s tragic passing, Short stepped back from the tour, postponing several scheduled dates in February.
