Meghan Markle has come under fire from a Hollywood celebrity following a sharp one-liner that reignited persistent questions about her relationship with Prince Harry. The Duchess of Sussex was unexpectedly pulled into a reality television discussion this week when actress Jennifer Tilly drew a pointed parallel that rapidly spread across social media.
What began as commentary about The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills quickly shifted focus to Meghan.
The dig emerged after new cast members Amanda Frances and Bozoma “Boz” Saint John asserted they had “never watched the show before joining,” prompting numerous critics to dismiss the claim as insincere. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Chucky actress remarked that their claim was “like Meghan Markle claiming she never Googled Prince Harry.”
Tilly’s remark touched on a much older controversy surrounding Meghan, who has consistently maintained that she did not look up Prince Harry or the Royal Family before their blind date in July 2016.
During their 2017 BBC engagement interview, Meghan clarified that she didn’t grow up with the same awareness of the monarchy and said her sole question to the friend who arranged their meeting was: “Well, is he nice?”, reports the Express.
She subsequently reinforced this position during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, declaring, “I never looked up my husband online. I just didn’t feel the need to because everything that I needed to know, he was sharing with me.”
In the Harry & Meghan Netflix documentary released in 2022, she elaborated on that position, stating she steered clear of tabloids and instead concentrated on what Harry was “putting out about themselves”, while also recognizing that she did browse his Instagram feed.
The assertion has long sparked debate. Former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown previously characterized Meghan’s explanation as “disingenuous,” highlighting her background in acting and awareness of popular culture.
Supporters rallied to Meghan’s defense, with some criticizing Jennifer for taking an unwarranted jab. One viewer commented, “I would like for her to keep Meghan’s name out of her mouth, actually.”
Another responded: “Now hold the f— up, Jennifer Tilly, not too much on Meghan. I suggest she keep Meghan’s name out of her mouth and continue being Sutton’s sidekick.”
The quip was sparked by Amanda Frances, who is joining The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for its upcoming 15th season, candidly revealing she entered filming with a limited understanding of the franchise.
Amanda verified she had viewed just one episode before cameras started rolling – and only watched a second episode mid-season after production had already commenced.
She explained she intentionally avoided binge-watching the show to prevent herself from developing “preconceived notions” about the cast and their previous conflicts.
Her statements have been challenged by fellow cast members, including Boz, especially following intense confrontations with Dorit Kemsley. Amanda joins the series as a full-time “diamond holder” on season 15 and arrives with serious credentials, branding herself a “money queen” and as the author of Rich as F*k.
