Just in time for Halloween last week, Forbes published its slightly-ghoulish rankings for the ‘highest paid dead celebrities’ of the year so far.
Top of the list is Michael Jackson, with an estimated $105m of earnings for his estate this year courtesy of streaming royalties but also five productions of MJ: The Musical and a Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show. Jackson has topped Forbes’ posthumous-stars chart in 13 of the 16 full calendar years since his death in 2009, with the publication estimating his estate’s total earnings as $3.5bn over that period.
This year’s rankings saw Dr Seuss in second place with $85m of earnings through continued book sales, licensing and a Netflix partnership. Other late musicians to make the list include Pink Floyd’s Rick Wright and Syd Barrett ($81m apiece this year), The Notorious B.I.G. ($80m), Miles Davis ($21m), Elvis Presley ($17m), Jimmy Buffet ($14m), Bob Marley ($13m) and John Lennon ($12m).
