Miguel Escueta uses music to amplify social concerns in his comeback album.
Miguel Escueta is making a return to the music scene, seven years after deciding to retire.
GMANetwork.com and several entertainment media outlets spoke with Miguel during the press conference for his new album, Stand in the Fire.
Its lead single, which carries the same title, tackles themes that are timely and relevant to current events in the country.
According to Miguel, controversies involving the government served as the inspiration behind “Stand in the Fire.”
In fact, the music video, which was previewed during the media conference, features several news clips about flood control controversies, fuel-related issues, and other concerns.
“I don’t wanna say political, but it’s important to stand up for what you believe in,” he said.
“As a nation, it’s important not to let these instances like, the flood control scandal, slip up to our consciousness. Lagi na lang, okay, may mangyayari, ‘tapos makakalimutan, ‘tapos may bago ulit. I think it’s important for us to demand accountability.”
With his comeback, Miguel said listeners will notice a shift in his perspective.
He explained, “As you grow and mature, there’s more wisdom. I think now, having my own family and having a daughter, changes my perspective on life.
“And I think it’s important for artists to write about relevant things and bring it to life. I just feel like where I’m at in terms of how I feel and what I’m here about, now’s the time to talk about it.”

Miguel also shared the concept behind the music video: “I remember when we were discussing the news, just to share some insight, the oil crisis was happening. And then during that time, when the government said we can’t cut back the excise tax on oil because we need it for expenses, parang nakaka-rile up kasi you’re brought back to the flood control issue.
“Fast forward to just recently, the whole circus happening in the Senate. Parang, di ba, as a Filipino, it’s a very frustrating time.
And I just felt like I wasn’t the only one. Everyone on the production team got upset. And we wanted to create something just to remind everyone, ‘Hey, this has a result, to make a stand and make yourself heard.’
“And if this song gets to inspire people to continue to stand up, that’s probably the best thing I can do.”
Stand in the Fire consists of seven tracks, including reimagined versions of the April Boys hit “Honey My Love So Sweet” and “Bakit Ba Ganyan,” which was originally popularized by Dina Bonnevie.
The album is now available on streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music.
