Miley Cyrus’ family knows how to pick a song that sums them up.
In recent years, the Cyrus Family has often been on the headlines due to messy divorces, rumors, relationships and rivalries. But over time, they’ve found their way back to each other, appearing together at awards shows and openly supporting one another in interviews, talk shows and podcasts.
The family has been very busy this past year, though. For instance, Miley Cyrus released her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, along with an accompanying film. Noah Cyrus released her second album, I Want My Loved Ones to Go With Me, while Brandi Cyrus just wrapped up a residency in Las Vegas a couple of months ago. In between shows, Brandi records a podcast alongside her mom and Miley’s manager, Tish Cyrus-Purcell, Sorry We’re Cyrus.
In an interview with The Cut for the magazine’s “Fall Fashion” issue, the women of the Cyrus Family sat down on Tish’s couch in her Los Angeles home to discuss various topics such as their family dynamic, what music speaks to them, family values and what life lessons they had to learn recently the hard way.
A big topic that was discussed during their conversation was music and how it impacted their upbringing. The Hannah Montana star explained that they listened to a lot of 1980s rock and country music growing up. She even brought up the time when the family saw O-Town in downtown Nashville and Brandi snuck Miley into the pit section, which made Tish furious.
Eventually, the conversation turned to which song each of them would be. Miley admitted that hers was “The Thing” by The Pixies because she had a memory of the family driving up to Santa Barbara and blasting that song while driving through the strawberry fields.
Meanwhile, Brandi, the eldest daughter, who is also a singer, DJ and podcast host, said that her song was “That Don’t Impress Me Much” by Shania Twain. Released in 1997 as one of the singles in Twain’s album, Come On Over, the tune describes three self-absorbed suitors: a know-it-all, a man obsessed with his looks and another who’s obsessed with his car. Twain, as the title implies, is not impressed.
Miley responded afterwards, saying that her song was “very Brandi energy” and that she has “always been uncompromising, and that’s what [she] should be doing.”
Cyrus-Purcell admitted that her song choice was “Cherry Pie” by Warrant, while Noah picked “Against the Wind” by Bob Seger, and even revealed that she has a tattoo of the song’s cover art and it was the song she sang while their grandma was in the hospital.
“That’s why we want to make impactful music, not music based off numbers. Do you know what number that song was on a chart? I don’t…And in today’s world, music comes and goes so fast that there aren’t very many songs that are released and have that kind of impact on people because they’re just so disposable. That’s why I always think music should be about memories, not numbers,” Miley responded. “Numbers are for math and sports, not music.”
Brandi, now 38 years old, is still very much active in the music industry. This past May and June, Brandi had a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, where she showcased her unique DJ style that mixes country, pop and other hits. In addition to her music career, Brandi co-hosts the podcast Sorry We’re Cyrus with her mom, which can be streamed on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeart and YouTube.
