A generational talent!
Based in Canada, music artist ZADA has a voice that gives you no choice but to stop and listen. She has quite the discography, but her latest single “Access Denied” is one of our personal favorites.
We had the absolute pleasure of speaking with ZADA about maintaining diversity in music, Africa performing goal, and more!
Congratulations on your new single “Access Denied”! Can you explain the meaning behind it and how it came to be?
Z: “You know, it’s kind of funny but I just realized “Access Denied” is sort of the sister song to “All In Your Mind” from my debut album! They both show a strong individual who knows what they want, except this time with “Access Denied” it’s all about protecting your energy and peace of mind. The inspiration for this song came from the need to create healthier boundaries.”
Do you think this release marks a new era in your career? How so?
Z: “To be honest, there’s so much diversity within my music, I feel like I’m always evolving sonically. Lyrically though I definitely feel more confident in my songwriting skills – these next couple of songs really popped out with ease. I’ve honestly been having the most fun making these records. I always have, but there’s something about free-spirited creation!”
From festival to festival, you are always on stage! What do you enjoy the most about performing live?
Z: “Aw, I love this question. I would say so many things, it’s hard to narrow it down! I love how every day is different – you never put on the same show twice and connecting with different audiences is really special. The best part is playing with my band, they’re incredible and it feels like family.”
How would you personally describe the music scene in Canada?’
Z: “The music scene here is so diverse, especially the black music scene. I think there are some really incredible underground “rumblings” that are happening right now and so much talent that is grounded in true expression! I love getting to be a part of that.”
What festival or event is on your dream board to perform at in the future?
Z: “I would love to perform in South Africa… actually anywhere in Africa would be insane!! I also would love to play Reeperbahn!”
You are opening for Alex Porat’s tour this fall! If you were to go on tour soon, which fellow artists would you take on the road with you?
Z: “I know!!! I’m so excited, it happened so fast. I’m really looking forward to watching Alex Porat live, it’s an honor to be able to share the stage. It would be pretty cool to go on the road with Daysormay, or Teon Gibbs, or even some of the wonderful artists from HoneyJam!!”
As an Ethiopia-born artist, how important do you think diverse representation is in the music industry?
Z: “Music is a universal language and because of this we have to maintain our diversity to the max. Every country and every culture has something unique to share!”
