All of us have probably wished we were related to someone as influential as Rod Stewart at least once in our life, right?
For the 28-year-old best-selling artist Yungblud, though, that relatable fantasy was actually a real-life belief he held for most of his early life.
Speaking in a recent interview on The Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill, the award-winning British pop singer revealed that he spent nearly a decade under the assumption that he was related to the 80-year-old music icon, Stewart.
“So basically, my mum never had a dad,” Yungblud said in the interview. “My nan was always a very imaginative lady, and my nan would lie to me.”
“She’d put me in a foot bath and lie to me and say that Rod Stewart was my grandfather for, like, my formative years,” the artist continued.
While he spent most of his early childhood assuming the “Tonight’s the Night” singer was his grandfather, Yungblud ultimately learned the truth about his connection to Stewart (or lack thereof) in hilariously awkward fashion.
“So up to about 9 years old, I thought Rod Stewart was my grandad,” the “Cotton Candy” singer said. “Until I was in Asda, right? I was doing the weekly shop with my nan, and I remember by the checkout I picked up a Rod Stewart CD.”
“[I was] like proper quivering lip, like, ‘Nan, when’s granddad coming home?’” Yungblud went on to say. “And everyone at the checkout started laughing, started laughing at us, knowing that they caught my grandmother in a blatant lie! And that was the day I found out Rod Stewart was not in fact my grandfather.”
As disappointing as this realization might have been, Yungblud went on to confirm that he and Stewart have been in touch over social media, with the music icon playfully referring to him as “his grandson” during their conversations together.
He says, ‘Alright my wee grandson!’” Yungblud said. “And I was like, ‘Rod Stewart, man. He’s got the bants!’”
