“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.”

When Taylor Swift released the track list for The Life of a Showgirl, there was one song that caught everyone’s attention. Instantly, rumors started circling the internet about who “Ruin the Friendship” could be about, whether she’d be referencing Blake Lively, who had recently pulled Swift into her legal troubles, or calling back to “Bad Blood” and Katy Perry. Or was it a response to Charli XCX’s “Sympathy Is a Knife”? But while the star did send a message to XCX on the album, it wasn’t on this track.

With nods to the radio hits of her high school prom (50 Cent), the Nashville roads she’d drive, and her lifelong friend Abigail (of Fearless’ “Fifteen” fame), she recalled all the times she almost kissed a friend—but didn’t.

“Glistening grass from September rain / Gray overpass full of neon names / You drive, 85 / Gallatin Road and the lakeside beach / Watching the game from your brother’s Jeep / Your smile, miles wide / And it was not an invitation / Should’ve kissed you anyway / Should’ve kissed you anyway / And it was not convenient, no / But your girlfriend was away / Should’ve kissed you anyway.”

In the bridge, what started as a sweet will-they-won’t-they tale took a heartbreaking turn as Swift jumped forward in time: “When I left school, I lost track of you / Abigail called me with the bad news / Goodbye.”

“It was not an invitation / But I flew home anyway / With so much left to say / It was not convenient, no / But I whispered at the grave / ‘Should’ve kissed you anyway.’”

At the end, Swift skipped ahead once more, speaking in the present tense. “My advice is always ruin the friendship / Better that than regret it for all time,” she sang. “Always answer the question / Better that than to ask it all your life.”
