Saesangs or obsessive fans have become a menace to celebrities. They not only invade their privacy, but also obsessively stalk and even indulge in criminal activities like breaking into homes and recording the celebs without permission.
Recently, Chinese actor-singer Ling Chao, also known as DIDI, came across one such fan. Instead of running away or hiding, he decided to confront her. His reaction has now gone viral on social media, sparking a debate on the incident.
In many clips that have surfaced on social media, recorded by paparazzi and bystanders, the singer appeared frustrated after a fan tried to film him at a very close range. The woman was seen putting her phone’s camera right in front of his face as he walked out of a place, which seemed to irritate Ling Chao, and he retaliated. He knocked her phone out of her hand and further grabbed her by her hoodie, which made her stumble and fall.
Ling Chao Snatches Fan’s Phone
As seen in the clip, a member of his staff immediately intervened, pulling the singer away from the fan to prevent the situation from escalating. Another video, believed to have been filmed shortly afterward in a parking lot, showed Ling Chao opening the door of his car and leaping toward a woman who was filming him. He snatched her phone and threw it away before getting back into the vehicle.
Internet Is Divided Over Ling Chao’s Action
In no time, the clips went viral on the Internet, garnering a wide range of reactions from the public. While some came out in support of the actor-singer, another section found him aggressive. One user said, “I fail to see what he did wrong. She is most definitely a sasaeng. And he didn’t want to assault her. He wanted to snatch the phone she was throwing at his face. I wish more bodyguards did exactly this, instead of just being there doing the bare minimum.”
Meanwhile, one individual shared, “I am still incredulous! Are they obsessed, dangerous, and mentally unstable? Yes, they are. But resorting to physical aggression in this way is abhorrent.”
Another mentioned, “I mean, an idol is bound to crash the f–k out on someone, especially if they constantly stalk and get into their personal space. Was it a bit much? Yes, but ideally it kind of teaches a d—s to use their brain and think hmm, maybe I shouldn’t be doing this to a person that literally doesn’t know me.”
Ling Chao’s Agency Releases Statement, Revealing Those Were Stalker Fans
Following the incident, Ling Chao’s agency released an official statement, denying claims that he physically assaulted a person. The agency clarified that the indecent did not occur at an airport, but at a high-speed rail station. They stated that the actor-singer just took the individual’s phone, which resulted in a cracked screen, but he did not engage in any physical violence.
His agency revealed that it was a saesang or sisheng, meaning stalker fans, who repeatedly invade celebrities’ private lives. They added that both sides have reached an agreement regarding compensation for the damaged phone.
