SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Russel M. Nelson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wrote the lyrics for a song in the new hymnbook, “Hymns—For Home and Church.”
The lyrics to the hymn, called “Our Prayer to Thee,” were first published in the “Ensign” (now the “Liahona”) magazine in 2003. The hymn was also performed at general conference in October 2018 and April 2022.
“It’s a super, super special song,” hymnbook singer Emily Winters, who sings on the new batch’s English recordings, said. “It’s very sacred, talking about us and God. It’s a beautiful representation of our relationship.”
Nelson’s hymn and 11 other songs continue to add to the collection of the new hymnbook. These additions bring the total number of songs in “Hymns—For Home and Church” to 60 in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.
The new hymns now available are:
- “Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends”
- “Help Us Remember”
- “How Did the Savior Minister”
- “Jesus Is the Way”
- “Can You Count the Stars in Heaven?”
- “He Cares for Me”
- “Our Prayer to Thee”
- “Joseph Prayed in Faith”
- “Stand by Me”
- “This Day Is a Good Day, Lord”
- “Go Tell It on the Mountain”
- “Little Baby in a Manger”
It’s been more than a year since The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints started releasing batches of the new hymnbook. The final edition is planned to be printed by mid-2027.
The plans to create a new hymnbook were first announced in 2018, with church leaders asking members to send in original songs and fill out a questionnaire regarding the church’s music. Church leaders reported that more than 17,000 songs were submitted.
