Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were featured in both Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner’s Instagram posts showing pictures from Kris’ star-studded 70th birthday party in November – but the pictures of the couple were later deleted. The reason behind the decision to delete was, according to Kim, due to the event taking place as the royals marked Remembrance back in the UK.
According to PR expert Rhea Freeman, the blunder showcased a huge issue for the couple, who stepped down as senior working royals in 2020. She told the Daily Express: “The so-called Meghan and Kris Jenner ‘photogate’ is not scandalous in itself. People move in social circles; that is hardly new. The issue, from a PR perspective, is the muddle that follows.”
She then added: “For the Sussexes, this highlights a broader issue of positioning. Are they critics of celebrity culture, or participants in it?
“British audiences, in particular, are quick to spot inconsistency, and ambiguity rarely plays well over time. Ultimately, the embarrassment is not the party.”
She then identified the issue from a PR perspective, adding: “It is the lack of clarity. In PR terms, it is almost always better to be seen and unapologetic than present and uneasy. Ownership creates confidence; hesitation creates headlines.”
Speaking on the Khloe in Wonderland podcast, Kim said: “Mom and Meghan have been friends for some years now and they have a really sweet relationship.
“We took a photo, and then I think we were all going through them. We’re all on, you know, communicating about like what we’re going to post.
“We’re never ones to post without permission. We are like it’s not who we are. We’re very respectful. Yeah, like we have photos, we have the craziest, funnest photos from that night, you know, but we were posting just like fun photos and so dignified photos.”
She then added: “We were told that it was totally cool to post, and then after it was posted, I think they realised it was Remembrance Day and they didn’t want to be seen at a party even though it’s already up.”
