You can take the prince out of England, but you can’t take the English out of the prince. Yesterday, Prince Harry stepped back into his roots with a surprise polo match ahead of the holiday season.
Widely considered to be the oldest ball sport in the world, polo originated in Central Asia during the 6th century BC, before spreading to India, where it was later altered by 19th century British soldiers. Just like spices, tea, and fabrics, the soldiers took polo home to England, introducing their version of the game to the West—and it has been a staple in British culture ever since.
The sport has always been particularly popular with members of the royal family, including the late Prince Philip and his son, now-King Charles III. Princes William and Harry also picked up the game, and although the latter moved to California some five years ago with wife Duchess Meghan, he has kept it up.
Earlier this week, the royal made his way to Colorado for the Aspen Valley Polo Club’s St. Regis World Snow Polo Championships, where he competed against his longtime friend, Argentine polo player Nacho Figueras. Riding horseback, Harry looked striking in a bright sky-blue, branded quarter-zip sweatshirt from Casablanca and snow-white trousers. (His horse coordinated with him with color-matched leg warmers—more formally known as polo wraps—that gave a bit of fashion inspo themselves.)
While Meghan stayed home, she shared her support for her husband via Instagram, posting a Story of Harry in action with a cheeky caption: “Oh, hello there.”
