Prince Harry first laid eyes on Meghan Markle on Instagram in July 2016, not on Suits, and wrote in his memoir he’d ‘never seen anyone so beautiful’
Prince Harry has disclosed that he first saw his future wife Meghan Markle not on her popular TV show Suits, but on a friend’s Instagram post in 2016, and was immediately smitten by her beauty.
In his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex, now 44, narrates how he was casually “scrolling through Instagram” at Kensington Palace’s Nottingham Cottage on July 1, 2016, when a video of his childhood friend Violet von Westenholz alongside an unknown woman grabbed his attention, according to the Daily Mail.
Harry recalls the moment he first saw his future wife: “They were playing with a new app that put silly filters on your photos. Violet and the woman had dog ears, dog noses, long red dog tongues hanging out. Despite the canine cartoon overlay, I sat up straighter. This woman with Violet… my God.”

The love-struck prince watched the video “several times,” confessing: “I’d never seen anyone so beautiful. She believed life was one grand adventure. I could see that. What a privilege it would be, I thought to join her on that journey. In that moment I felt there might be only one face for me.”
Violet linked the two via Instagram after Harry’s urgent request, reports the Express.
Eager to meet the woman who had stolen his heart, Harry sent an urgent message to Violet, asking to be introduced to Meghan. Violet responded almost immediately, revealing that while “six other guys” had inquired about the actress, she was willing to “connect” the pair via Instagram.
Shortly afterward, Harry got a message from Meghan herself, praising the “beautiful photographs” he had posted from his African adventures. The two swiftly swapped phone numbers and launched into an intense texting exchange that left Harry’s thumbs “cramping” as he struggled to keep pace.
Harry was smitten, messaging Meghan “like a teenager” during dinner.
In his memoir Spare, Harry admitted that during a visit to British entrepreneur Sir Keith Mills’ residence for dinner soon after, he was messaging Meghan “throughout the long drive and up the stairs into his guestroom.
“I locked the door and remained holed up, texting. I sat on my bed texting like a teenager until it was time to have dinner with Sir Keith and his family. Then, after dessert, I quickly returned to the guestroom and resumed texting,” he revealed.
Despite their apparently different lifestyles, Harry found their differences “organic” and “energising,” and didn’t hesitate to invite Meghan on a date before she had to return to Canada, where Suits was being produced.
Meghan proposed they grab drinks at Soho House, “her headquarters whenever she came to London,” and reserved a table for them at the upscale member’s club on July 3, 2016. Unfortunately, Harry wound up running 30 minutes behind schedule because of heavy traffic.
Harry was “heart-attack beautiful” and the pair fell in love in Botswana After a rocky beginning, the couple quickly found their rhythm, with Prince Harry calling Meghan “heart-attack beautiful.”
Though Meghan had to leave early for dinner plans, they reconnected via FaceTime that same night to arrange a second meeting.
After another promising encounter at Soho House, Harry elevated their budding romance by whisking Meghan away on a week-long safari to Botswana. During what was essentially their third date, the pair fell deeply in love.
Harry had “no idea” about Meghan’s Suits fame, Meghan was clueless too.
In their November 2017 engagement interview with BBC’s Mishal Husain, Harry admitted he had had “no idea” about Meghan’s role on Suits, explaining: “I had never even heard about her until this friend said ‘Meghan Markle’. I was like ‘right, okay, give me a bit of background!'”
Meghan similarly acknowledged her limited knowledge of the prince, revealing: “I didn’t know much about him and so the only thing that I had asked her when she said she wanted to set us up was – I had one question. I said, ‘Well, is he nice?'”
From a serendipitous Instagram discovery to a storybook wedding witnessed by millions worldwide, Harry and Meghan’s romance remains legendary – despite their Royal path eventually veering in an unforeseen direction.
