TalkTV presenter Mark Dolan addressed Prince Harry’s recent comments following a recent visit to Ukraine. The broadcaster suggested the Duke of Sussex is “tearing up his agreement” with his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. It comes after King Charles’s son urged Washington to honour its obligations in the Ukrainian conflict.
Six years after he left the UK, Harry said he will “always be part of the Royal Family”. The Duke of Sussex spoke to ITV News at the end of a two-day visit to Ukraine.
Speaking on his show on Monday, Mark spoke to royal correpsondent Rupert Lowe, who claimed the prince is “desperate to stay relevant” and said he’s “no longer part of the royal family” despite his recent trips to Australia with wife Meghan Markle and a solo trip to Ukraine.
The royal biographer questioned: “Does he want to be a politician? If he is still in the royal family, he can’t be. If he renounces himself from the royals then he could. Now, he is living in America with his wife. He doesn’t get the balance right.”
Harry and his wife Meghan were effectively given their “marching orders” from the Royal Family in 2020 following the Megxit fallout as they stepped down as senior royals, which culminated in the loss of their tax-payer funded security.
Mark commented: “Well of course, it goes back to the fact that Harry, in my view, wants to be ‘half-in half-out’ which was a status expressly rejected by his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II when they negotiated Megxit.
My concerns about this ITV interview are what we witnessed in that conversation is Harry tearing up his agreement with the late Queen.”
Rupert replied: “He’s been trying to do this the whole time. Look what was going on in Australia. For all intents and purposes it was a royal tour. He was going to hospitals, Bondi beach. He was doing things that would normally happen on a royal tour.
“He is desperately trying to prove he is a force for good, but the Australian public was certainly apathetic towards his visit. This is because he is not part of the Royal Family. He thinks they can do this, yet they were monetising this trip.”
During Harry’s third trip to Ukraine, the royal insisted he was “not here as a politician” but as a “humanitarian” and “a soldier who understands service”.
Rupert concluded: “But for Harry to say something about America is way out of kilter and way out of line if he still thinks he’s a part of the royal family. So once again, I’m sure in the corridors of Buckingham Palace, there is yet more eye rolling at the antics of the wayward son.”
According to Hugo Vickers’s biography Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Harry’s attempt to negotiate a “half-in, half-out” arrangement in early 2020 was rejected outright by the Queen. The proposal would have allowed him to be financially independent while still serving the Crown occasionally.
