Kansas City Royals star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. exited the team’s game on Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals with a knee injury. The Royals earned a 14-6 win, but all attention was on Witt’s injury after the game. Tricia Whitaker of Apple TV provided an update on Witt’s injury status on Friday before the Royals’ rematch with the Cardinals.

“Bobby Witt Jr got a MRI today and has a grade 1 MCL sprain,” Whitaker reported. “The Royals will see what he feels like on Sunday. Matt Quatraro told me in our meeting with him before our Apple TV broadcast tonight, it’s ‘best case scenario’ and they’re optimistic.”
It is a huge injury update to say the least. The Royals will obviously still proceed with caution, but things could have been much worse for Witt.
Witt is one of the best players in MLB. The 26-year-old shortstop is hitting .294/.368/.465 to go along with 10 home runs, 19 doubles and a league leading 28 stolen bases. His 4.3 WAR is also the best in the league, as Witt makes a significant impact both offensively and defensively.
He has finished second and fourth in American League MVP voting in each of the past two years. Witt could potentially earn the award for the first time this season if he continues performing at an elite level. However, the focus at the moment is simply on making sure that Witt is healthy.
