As the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance enters its third week, criticism of Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has only gotten louder.
In a statement to Parade addressing the scrutiny, Nanos said, “Right now, our focus is on this investigation and serving the victims and this community. Internal or political commentary distracts from this active investigation, and it is very unfortunate. My focus remains on justice and transparency.”
Nanos’ comments followed concerns raised by law enforcement officials who questioned whether his leadership decisions have slowed progress in the search for Guthrie, who was reported missing from her Tucson home earlier this month.
Sgt. Aaron Cross, president of the Pima County Deputies Organization, previously told The Post on Thursday, February 19, “It is a common belief in this agency that this case has become an ego case for Sheriff Nanos.”
Federal officials have also expressed concern about the cases’ developments.
Sources familiar with the investigation said the FBI is “growing frustrated” nearly three weeks after Guthrie was last seen, with one saying, “Over two whole weeks into this, the police have made no leads, no progress,” according to The Post.
Authorities have yet to publicly identify any suspects in connection with Guthrie’s disappearance.
On Monday, February 16, Nanos formally cleared members of Guthrie’s immediate family, including her children, Savannah Guthrie, and her siblings Annie and Camron Guthrie, along with their spouses, from suspicion in the case.
“To be clear…the Guthrie family to include all siblings and spouses has been cleared as possible suspects in this case. The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case,” Nanos said.
“To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, but it is also cruel.”
Guthrie, 84, has been missing since February 1.
On Thursday, Trump responded to the FBI’s handling of the case, “It’s so crazy. It’s so bad.
“I didn’t like it when they were going after the pacemaker before they started going after her. They were coming and reporting it. So if, in fact, they could do it that way, the person would say, ‘Well, I’m not going to let it happen.’ Right?”
He added, “So bad things would happen. If they hadn’t, they wouldn’t let it happen. I can’t imagine why they would have done that.
“In terms of strategy, it’s one little piece. I don’t know.”
“We have to start reporting on other subjects. Also, we’ll see what happens. It’s a very sad situation,” he noted.
