Spotify’s flagship playlist is getting more of a human touch, albeit only in the US for now. Its team of editors will now be appearing in videos within ‘New Music Friday’ to talk about some of each week’s tracks.
This isn’t a new idea for Spotify – these video cameos began last September with a playlist called ‘The Drop Weekly’. Spotify says that this has been successful enough to roll the idea out to its new-releases playlist.
“Listeners respond strongly to editor-led discovery experiences, resulting in more than double the engagement through saves and likes,” noted the company in its announcement. There’s no news yet on when this might expand beyond the US.
In separate news from Spotify, its data team has been crunching some numbers for Nelly Furtado’s 2006 album ‘Loose’ for the company’s Substack.
It has more than 4.4bn streams overall, but 940m of them – its biggest year yet – came in 2025. In keeping with some other resurgent albums of that era, nearly two thirds of its streams currently come from listeners aged under 30.
