Stephen A. Smith let loose on Tiger Woods on Tuesday after the legendary golfer was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a rollover crash involving prescription medications in Florida last week.
The incident marks the second time Woods has been arrested for a DUI — not as a result of the influence of alcohol — since 2017. The 15-time major tournament winner was also involved in other auto-related incidents over the years, including crashing his SUV into a fire hydrant in 2009 and a single-car rollover crash in February 2021.
Appearing on Chris Cuomo’s NewsNation program on Tuesday, Smith stressed that Woods “desperately” needs help.
“You had this problem in 2017 when they found you asleep in your car on the side of the road. You had this problem in 2021 when you crashed into a tree and tumbled over and almost got yourself killed,” Smith said of Woods. “You had this issue again last Friday. All three times, you’re inebriated and you’re behind the wheel of a car.”
The sports commentator suggested that the incident was avoidable, considering Woods, who is the second-highest-paid athlete of all time behind Michael Jordan, “can afford a car service.”
“What the hell are you doing getting behind the wheel of a car?” Smith decried. “Most of us would be in jail. Remember the second incident in 2021. They didn’t even — they didn’t charge him. They didn’t make him take an alcohol, you know, breathalyzer test. They didn’t test his blood, any of that stuff. He was hospitalized. They left him alone.”
Arguing that the public believes the golf icon has “gotten away with a lot” amid his run-ins with the law, Smith added, “And they’re sick and tired of it, because they’re saying, ‘What is it going to take? Is he going to kill someone?’ You never thought that you would hear such a verbiage accorded towards Tiger Woods.”
Woods was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a rollover crash on Jupiter Island, Florida, just before 2 p.m. on Friday. The Martin County Sheriff said that Woods was traveling at “high speeds” on a residential road.
The golfer agreed to a Breathalyzer test that showed no signs of alcohol, but refused a urine test and was arrested. TMZ reported that authorities found Woods had two hydrocodone pills in his pocket at the time of his arrest.
A deputy said Woods, who has a documented history of struggling with pain medications following chronic back injuries and multiple surgeries, was “lethargic and slow” and showed “severe signs of impairment,” according to an affidavit obtained by the outlet.
Smith had also criticized Woods on Monday’s episode of his eponymous Sirius XM show.
“My brother, you got issues with drugs … Stop getting behind the damn wheel! … Just stop before you do something you can’t come back from,” he said.
