Taylor Swift Explains Album Color Decision for ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ — and It’s Deeper Than You Think originally appeared on Parade.
On Wednesday, Taylor Swift appeared as a guest on her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s podcast New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother, Jason Kelce. In the two-hour episode, the 35-year-old singer opened up about many topics, including how she felt when she got the rights back to her music, what she did this past summer, how she deals with media scrutiny and of course, the inspiration, details and stories behind her upcoming release, The Life of a Showgirl.
Towards the end of the podcast, Swift revealed the album cover, the tracklist and the release date of her twelfth studio album. The record will only include 12 songs, one of them being a collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, and will be out on streaming platforms on October 3.
Each of Swift’s albums — or “eras” — comes with its own theme and signature color palette. For The Life of a Showgirl, that palette is orange and mint green. When Jason Kelce asked about the significance of the color orange, Swift first simply jokingly and sarcastically replied, “I’ve just always liked it, Jason.”
“It feels like kind of energetically, how my life has felt,” the singer continued. “This album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during [the Eras Tour], which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant.”
The “Style” singer revealed that she wrote and recorded The Life of a Showgirl in Sweden while on the European leg of her Eras Tour, which took place from May to July 2024. Swift worked with producers Max Martin and Shellback on this album, who were also the main collaborators for many of her hits on her albums Red and 1989.
Swift also explained that she has different goals with each of her albums, as well as a theme. Since Showgirl was written while she was in the Eras Tour, she explained that the theme behind this next release was to share “everything that was going on behind the curtain,” while the two goals were to have songs with “melodies that were so infectious that you are almost angry at it, and lyrics that are just as vivid, crisp, focused and completely intentional.”
“I wanted the album to feel the way my life felt, and this completely matches the way my life has felt,” Swift said. “This is the record I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time.”
The Life of a Showgirl will drop on October 3. Meanwhile, fans can listen to the rest of the New Heights podcast on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Audible and the Wondery app.
