Back in 2013, developer Crystal Dynamics rebooted the Tomb Raider franchise for the second time, after they previously rebooted Lara Croft for 2006’s Tomb Raider: Legend. The resulting game, simply titled Tomb Raider, was a huge hit and led to two sequels, as well as an animated spin-off series, entitled Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, on Netflix, starring Hayley Atwell as the title character. The series debuted its first season last year, and now we have a trailer and release date for Season 2.
Set within the continuity of the 2013 reboot series, the first season of the show acted as something of an epilogue to Shadow of the Tomb Raider, while this second – and final – season will function, essentially, as an epilogue to the entire re-reboot saga. To that end, as promised in the prior season, Season 2 will see the return of Lara’s estranged best friend, Sam Nakamura, who played a pivotal role in that 2013 game.
The word on the street is that Crystal Dynamics is working on the next Tomb Raider game, which will introduce a “unified timeline.” Rather than another reboot, the next game will unify all versions of Lara Croft into one, taking elements from all three video game timelines and mashing them all together, presumably glossing over the myriad continuity errors that would create. I like the idea of their approach being “screw it, everything is canon, don’t sweat the small details.” I also appreciate that, for people who grew up on this particular iteration of Lara Croft, this TV series will get to be the grand finale, the ‘final chapter’ of the story that began in 2013.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft debuts its second and final season December 11 on Netflix.
