Fans of The Office have long wondered what happened to the iconic Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin after the series ended in 2013. Now, Peacock’s new series The Paper finally offers answers and some surprises about whether the company shut down or not.
What happened to the Dunder Mifflin paper company from The Office?
The Paper opens with a time jump, reminding viewers that a documentary crew began filming in Scranton back in 2005 and has now returned 20 years later. But this time, the cameras don’t find Dunder Mifflin in its old spot at the Scranton Business Park. Instead, the office has been taken over by One and Done Laser.
That revelation comes courtesy of Bob Vance, the ever-familiar Vance Refrigeration owner, played once again by Robert R. Shafer. “Dunder Mifflin? Yeah, they’ve been gone for a while,” he recalls, noting that his wife Phyllis and Stanley still keep in touch.
According to the Scranton Chamber of Commerce records shown in the series, Dunder Mifflin was officially purchased in 2019 by a Toledo-based company called Enervate. The new parent company specializes in paper products ranging from office supplies to janitorial goods and even local newspapers.
While the Scranton branch may be gone, creator Greg Daniels clarified that Dunder Mifflin itself hasn’t completely disappeared. Oscar Martinez, played by Oscar Nunez, now works at Enervate’s Toledo offices, and boxes of Dunder Mifflin paper still appear on-screen. “It’s not that it’s no more,” Daniels explained. “It’s just part of this larger company called Enervate now.”
That means the brand lives on, even if its most famous office doesn’t. For fans hoping the new series would bring back the full Scranton crew, Daniels made it clear that The Paper is its own story. “This show has to live or die on its own merits,” he said. (via The Variety)
Though The Paper explores Enervate’s attempt to revive a struggling local newspaper, it sprinkles in callbacks to The Office. Beyond Oscar and Bob Vance, there are nods to the company’s past, but the series avoids becoming a full-blown reboot.
