“The Ultimate ’90s Movie” is hoping the third time at Bay Beach Amusement Park is the charm — and blissfully dry.
The independent movie that has been trying to film a critical scene with extras at the historic Green Bay park was rained out for a second time on Aug. 18.
The cast and crew arrived late morning and had hoped to be able to work around the showers, but it proved to be an unrelenting rain. Bay Beach eventually closed at 2 p.m. due to the weather.
Despite the wet weather, a strong showing of local extras dressed in 1990s attire showed up for “The Ultimate ’90s Movie” (working title) on Aug. 9 at Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay. The rescheduled date of Aug. 18 was also rained out. Extras are invited to return at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19.
The original Bay Beach shoot date of Aug. 9 was also interrupted by rain and storms and was moved to Aug. 18, the second-to-last day of scheduled filming for the Madison-based project.
Uncooperative weather has been a challenge for the cast and crew, but it won’t stop them from returning. They will be back at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19, and producer and director Joshua “Rip” Mallett points out there’s no rain in the forecast all afternoon.
He shared the latest update in a rainy Instagram Reels from outside a gas station. Having to make the trip to Green Bay for a third time means additional costs for gas, lodging, meals and other travel expenses for a film working with a tight budget, he said.
“It’s unfortunate. It sucks for everybody involved, from the production to the cast to the crew to the extras, so very sorry for the unfortunate circumstances,” Mallett said in the video. “Very sorry for it to have to come down to this, but we tried our absolute best to do every single thing that we can today to make it work and it just wasn’t happening.”
He thanked the extras, who can be any age and are asked to come dressed like it’s 1998, for their patience and hopes to get a good turnout one last time. For those who haven’t had their scrunchies and baggy jeans at the ready for the last two weeks but are planning to show up this time, a ’90s style guide on how to dress is at www.90s.movie.
There’s also a donation button on the film’s website for anyone wishing to help with production costs.
“The Ultimate ’90s Movie” (working title) is a nostalgic a coming-of-age drama set in the Midwest in 1998. It centers on 14-year-old Josh (played by Nicholas Zoto) as he navigates the ups and downs of adolescence, including friends, family struggles, first love and his dream of being a musician.
