For many people, fame looks glamorous from the outside. But behind the awards, sold-out concerts and millions of fans is a different reality that many celebrities rarely talk about. Nigerian music star Davido recently opened up about that side of fame, revealing his dream of building a therapy and mental health support centre for celebrities who have stepped away from the spotlight.
Speaking during a recent interview, the award-winning singer described the internet as a tough place for public figures. According to him, a celebrity can be celebrated one day and harshly criticised the next over a single mistake. He said the pressure of constantly living under public scrutiny is one of his greatest fears.
Davido explained that if he had the opportunity, he would establish a centre where people who were once famous and successful could receive therapy, counselling and mental health support as they adjust to life after fame.
He said, “If there is one thing I could build, I will build a centre for people who have been popular and successful before, where they can get therapy. It’s crazy being on top of the world before, and tomorrow you are not.”
Drawing comparisons with sports, Davido noted that even world-class athletes are not spared from online criticism. He said a footballer could win major trophies one season but still face abuse the next when expectations are not met.
Using football icon Cristiano Ronaldo as an example, Davido recalled seeing the wave of criticism directed at the Portuguese star after a World Cup campaign despite everything he has achieved in his career. He said watching such reactions reminded him how quickly public opinion can change. The singer admitted that losing public acceptance after years of hard work is something he constantly thinks about. He said he often prays for the wisdom to know the right time to step away from music before his career declines.
According to him, he asks God to show him the right time to “take a bow” from the music industry while people still appreciate his work.
His comments have sparked conversations on social media, with many fans praising the idea. Supporters believe retired entertainers and other public figures often struggle with life after fame and would benefit from professional therapy, counselling and emotional support.
As discussions around mental health continue to grow, many believe that Davido’s proposal has drawn attention to an issue that is rarely discussed openly in the entertainment industry.
