Ayo Edebiri may have provided one of the most surprising moments of the 2025 Emmys even before the telecast started. The star was scheduled to make her Emmys return tonight, once again nominated for her role as Syndey on the third season of FX hit The Bear. In addition to her nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series—the actress was nominated for the same award in 2024 after taking home the trophy in the Supporting Actress category in 2023—Edebiri is actually a dual nominee tonight for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series as well.
All of which made it rather shocking that the star did not turn up on the red carpet for the event.
Edebiri has recently been making the rounds for the upcoming Luca Guadagnino film, After the Hunt, in which she stars alongside Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. The movie recently made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, however, with its theatrical release not due until October, it had seemed unlikely that the press tour would conflict with the Emmys. Nonetheless, Edebiri was a no-show, but so far that star has not commented on her decision to skip the event.
In addition to the acting nod, Edebiri is also in competition tonight for her direction on The Bear’s season 3 episode “Napkins.” (As has become its habit, the show debuted its fourth season this summer after the window for 2025 Emmys closed at the end of May, meaning only the third season is eligible for tonight’s awards.)
“The writing was just so beautiful. I remember reading it and seeing it in my mind, like really clearly,” she told Vanity Fair of directing the episode. “There was a real advantage because it was not only a standalone episode of a character that we hadn’t really gotten to see, but it got to be outside of the restaurant. It got to be in the past, and then it also got to connect before the show had even started, but the feeling of the first season, I just felt like it was really gonna be fertile, visually.”
And as for The Bear’s ever-controversial status competing in the comedy category? Edebiri weighed in, saying simply, “My feeling is that that is a question that is honestly above my pay grade. That’s a question for the studios.”
