Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are opening up about an unfortunate on-set incident.

In an Entertainment Weekly interview, published in September 2025 in celebration of the show’s 20th anniversary, Ackles, who played Dean Winchester, Padalecki, who played Sam Winchester, and Misha Collins, who played the angel Castiel, spoke about their time on Supernatural.

While speaking to the publication, the Supernatural stars were asked, “Who had the dumbest on-set injury?” Ackles was quick to motion toward Padalecki, who explained that he “broke [his] hand” while filming Season 2, Episode 3, titled “Bloodlust.” He said he had injured himself during a scene wherein Sam was “fighting vampires in a motel.”

“I tried to play it off. I fell and I snapped my scaphoid in my wrist,” said the Gilmore Girls actor.

Ackles then said, “Yeah, that was dumb.” Padalecki agreed with his former castmate, stating, “It was dumb.”

Jared Padalecki Mentioned His Broken Wrist During a 2018 Panel

During a panel at a 2018 Supernatural fan event, alongside Ackles, Padalecki shared more details about his on-set injury. He explained he needed to fall in the Season 2, Episode 3 scene because Sam was knocked out by a vampire.

“So as I fell, I’m acting like I passed out. The last second, I kind of put my hand to the side to catch myself,” said Padalecki to his fans at the event.

According to Padalecki, “the angle was incorrect,” causing him to snap his wrist bone. In addition, he said while he was in pain, he didn’t get his arm looked at for a few days. Eventually, an X-Ray showed that he had broken his wrist. However, he had already started filming Season 2, Episode 4, “Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things,” without a cast, meaning he had to put off having surgery on his arm.

“We had to wait until the following episode to get surgery on it,” said Padalecki, who continued playing Sam until the show’s 15th and final season, which premiered in 2020.

Padalecki noted that the Supernatural writers had Sam also injure his wrist, allowing him to wear a cast in later episodes of Season 2.
