Oxford University student Emma Watson’s final film out now

Oxford actress Emma Watson’s final film prior to her break from acting is out now on Netflix.

The actress is well known for her iconic role as Hermione Granger in all eight of the wizarding world’s films.

She is now studying at Oxford University, in the city where she grew up, having opted to study a Master’s degree in creative writing in September 2023.

It was announced in February that Ms Watson had switched to a DPhil, which is Oxford’s version of a PhD.

When she took on her new role in academia, the 35-year-old left acting in the past for the moment, having not appeared in a film since 2019.

This movie was Greta Gerwig’s remake of Little Women, which also starred fellow Oxford actress Florence Pugh in a star-studded line-up.

The timeless literary classic, which was written by Louisa May Alcott in 1868, tells the tale of sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy as they journey from adolescence to adulthood.

Ms Watson stars as Meg, and Ms Pugh plays Amy, while Saoirse Ronan and Eliza Scanlen play Jo and Beth, respectively.

Regarded by many as the best adaptation to date, 2019’s Little Women is now available to stream on Netflix.

Speaking to The Financial Times, Ms Watson explained taking a step away from acting for now.

“I think I felt a bit caged,” said Ms Watson in 2023.

“The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn’t have very much control over.

“I’m happy to sit and wait for the next right thing.

“I love what I do. It’s finding a way to do it where I don’t have to fracture myself into different faces and people.

“And I just don’t want to switch into robot mode anymore. Does that make sense?”
