Iconic Detroit-born radio show Big Sonic Heaven is returning to the radio on Sunday, Nov. 16 for the first time in more than 20 years.
The shoegaze, trip-hop, and atmospheric rock show created and hosted by Darren Revell is known for shaping Detroit’s alternative soundscape in the 1990s and early 2000s, according to a news release from WDET.
The show started in Detroit in 1995 as a specialty radio show on Planet 96.3. It spent 8½ years in Detroit then moved to Indie 103-1 Los Angeles. In 2013, Big Sonic Heaven became a podcast, blog and is currently a full-time internet radio station, according to it’s website bigsonicheaven.com.
“The station is dedicated to the ethereal and lush sounds of shoegaze, dream-pop and post-punk with a splash of trip-hop, darkwave, synth pop, britpop, etc,” according to bigsonicheaven.com. “New and classic artists are featured regularly.”
The show will air on WDET from 9 p.m. to midnight on Sundays beginning Nov. 16, according to the news release from WDET.
Each episode of Big Sonic Heaven will curate deep cuts from legends like Cocteau Twins and Slowdive alongside new artists inspired by their sound, according to WDET’s website, where people can find the episodes after they air.
Adding Big Sonic Heaven expands WDET’s jazz offerings and marks the end of The New Music Show, according to the news release.
