Nancy Guthrie’s neighbor was banned from staying inside her property while cops raided it overnight, it has been revealed.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed on February 14 that a federal court-ordered search warrant was executed at a residence near E. Orange Grove Rd. and N. First Ave. in connection with the Guthrie case overnight.
Curl told agents that the neighbor claimed “she had no idea what they were asking about.” He also added that the woman’s adult son was taken in for questioning and was later released.
Late on February 13, a nearby home in Tucson was raided by the Pima County Sheriff’s SWAT team. Additionally, a Range Rover suspected to be linked to the probe was pulled over during an FBI traffic stop around that same time.
Following the new moves in the investigation, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department once again confirmed that no arrests were made as part of the federal court-ordered search warrant.
Curl, who has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years, had just returned from vacation when a deputy knocked at his door, along with the woman next door. Curl told The New York Times, law enforcement had arrived at her home to execute a federal search warrant while she was alone. She was prohibited from remaining inside during the search and chose to spend the night at his house instead.
“She had no idea what they were asking about,” Curl said of his neighbor. “She had no information about the disappearance or any idea why they were focusing on their house.” Curl also reported that the woman told her that her adult son had been questioned by investigators and later released. He was staying with friends, though no further details about his whereabouts were provided.
Curl described his neighbor’s mental state as ‘distraught.’ After the investigators left their homes, he helped her lock up her home and reviewed a copy of the warrant involved the Guthrie case.
Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was taken from her $1 million home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood in the early hours of February 1. More than a week later, investigators have acknowledged they still have not identified any suspects or persons of interest.
Negotiations with the alleged kidnappers have stalled. According to TMZ, which obtained a copy of the ransom note, a digital wallet referenced for a potential Bitcoin transaction remained empty. The Guthrie family had been ordered to pay $6 million in Bitcoin by 5 p.m. local time Monday, with the promise that Nancy would be returned within 12 hours after payment.
After the deadline passed, the FBI released a statement saying it “is not aware of any continued communication between the Guthrie family and suspected kidnappers.”
The bureau is now leading “all elements of the investigation,” including the alleged ransom notes, while the Pima County Sheriff’s Office said the FBI is also handling “communications involving the Guthrie family.”
