Pixie cuts, colorful eyeshadow, low-rise jeans, and main-character energy—these MENA stars understood the assignment.

Long before TikTok aesthetics gave every niche a name, there was the manic pixie dream girl: the quirky, carefree, impossibly charming character who breezed through the early 2000s in pixie cuts, layered tanks, smudged eyeliner, and a wardrobe that looked assembled five minutes before running out the door. Equal parts whimsical and chaotic, the archetype became a defining visual language of the era, from indie films to music videos and red carpets.

Across the MENA region, a number of stars embodied that same spirit through playful styling, colorful beauty looks, and an unmistakable sense of individuality. Whether it was Menna Shalaby’s Downtown Girls-era pixie, Sherine Abdel Wahab’s iconic honey-highlighted crop, or Haifa Wehbe’s low-rise-jeans-and-arm-warmer combo, these looks captured the kind of effortless cool that would later become a Pinterest board category of its own.

Nour | 2001

In tailored black trousers and a fitted red top, Nour proved that manic pixie energy didn’t always require maximalism.

Elissa | 2001

Photographed in the backseat of a car, Elissa leaned fully into Y2K whimsy with a hot pink tank, a glossy magenta skirt, dramatic side-swept hair, and shimmery pink-and-white eyeshadow. It was playful, glamorous, and exactly the kind of look a rom-com heroine would wear while causing emotional upheaval.

Angham | 2002

With a sleek dark pixie cut, frameless tinted shades, ultra-thin brows, and a butter-yellow turtleneck, Angham delivered a softer, more understated take on the archetype.

Nancy Ajram | 2003

Nancy Ajram embodied peak early-2000s optimism in a sparkling sheer top, colorful eyeshadow, and a reddish updo. Trophy in hand, she looked like the protagonist at the end of a coming-of-age movie montage.

Haifa Wehbe | 2003

Performing on a football pitch in a black tank, low-waisted jeans, and grey-and-black arm warmers, Haifa Wehbe delivered the kind of cool-girl styling that defined the decade. The smoky eye and jet-black hair only amplified the rebellious, effortlessly magnetic vibe.

Menna Shalaby | 2005

On the set of Downtown Girls, Menna Shalaby’s grown-out pixie with honey-blonde highlights felt tailor-made for the manic pixie dream girl canon. Layered tops, hot pink accents, and shimmering eyeshadow completed a look that radiated spontaneity.

Sherine Abdel Wahab | 2005

Few hairstyles had the region in as much of a chokehold as Sherine’s honey-highlighted pixie. Paired with an off-the-shoulder white top, a bold red lip, and a strikingly simple backdrop, the look captured the playful confidence that made the archetype so enduring.
