I’ve been following Amanda on instagram for a while now, and was excited to hear she was making music. In these times, we all need music that can take us out of reality for a bit.
On April 10, former actress Amanda Bynes released a dance track called “Girlfriend” with Zabba and Fenix Flexin. When I first heard the intro, my brain immediately went to an underground cyberpunk rave in downtown L.A. where you only find out the address in DMs two hours before. It was something undeniably new—and unexpected. Instead of a typical pop formula, Amanda takes us to an EDM realm. Then Fenix Flexin comes in and now we are at Coachella in outer space. The production is engaging, and anything that makes me get up and start dancing with my arms in the air gets added to my playlist.

Amanda’s voice on this track is endearing, her natural voice so pretty, but obscured at times by what I assume is an overuse of AutoTune. Her lyrics are short and simple, leaving you wanting more—but sometimes minimal lyrics are the vibe for a dance track, especially when there’s another artist on the track. The hook “I wanna be your girlfriend” is catchy and potentially profound coming from such a complex artist. Or maybe it’s just a hook. Either way, it works.
Fenix Flexin comes in with a super catchy verse—but it sounds like more AutoTune? Why? It’s a choice, but AutoTune sometimes takes more than it offers. With that said, I really liked his verse. His style is relaxed and confident, not arrogant. The lyrics were super sexy too, saying “she bite, Ima Ima bite back.” Real hot!
The album art features a beautiful landscape scene with snow-laden trees and a pastel-pink sky. The snow has a light blue hue, adding to the overall look and feel. I’m a sucker for pastel vibes so I simply love the album art. I love it when artists use imagery that is unexpected in relation to the song. It takes me out of my “normal” pattern of thinking. That’s what art is supposed to do.
The outro of the track, with its pulsing kick and lush synth leads, leaves you jumping up and down with your fist in the air, like a classic EDM anthem should. The song goes hard and I love it. It takes you on a journey to a futuristic cyberpunk fest on planet What The Fuck. Amanda and her crew are tapping into something special and I can’t wait to hear what they make next.
