Angelina Jolie might have had a tense conversation with one of her Couture co-stars before she declared she “doesn’t recognize” the U.S. anymore.

The Academy Award-winning actress, 50, captivated her fans’ attention at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain on September 21. While promoting her new film, Couture, she made some bold remarks about America as she advocated for free speech.

Just before she addressed the “very, “very heavy times” in America, many noticed a flicker of visible tension between Angelina and her co-star Louis Garrel during an off-mic exchange. Now, forensic lip reader Nicola Hicking has decoded what she believes was said between the actors.

The expert claims she saw Louis lean in to tell Angelina “We need to have a chat.”

Nicola claims the actress reacted “sharply” saying, “what” as her smile disappeared.

She then noted she saw Louis “looking uncomfortable” as he “bit the inside of his cheek” and “raised his eyebrows in disbelief.”

Angelina allegedly then flicked her hair as she “glanced sideways at him then looked away.”

Moments later, Angelina told the crowd, “Anything, anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms, I think, is very dangerous.

“I love my country… but I don’t, at this time, recognize my country. I’ve always lived internationally,” she added, “My family is international. My life, my world view, is equal [and] united and international.”

“I think these are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. So I’ll be careful in a press conference… But these are very, very heavy times,” she concluded.

The lip reader believes the conversation Angelina had prior added a “very different tone” to her remarks.

Nicola also read into the two co-stars’ exchanges throughout their day at the film festival.

Upon their arrival, Louis “appeared to be nervous” as he “chewed his little finger.”

Later on in the Q&A, she also pointed out, “Angelina appears to be speaking warmly… and yet her eyes tell a different story.”

The actress’ new film Couture, which released earlier this month, addresses pressing topics like illness, family and loss. Angelina leads the drama movie as an American filmmaker named Maxine who is in the middle of Paris Fashion Week when she discovers she has breast cancer.

The movie brought up a heavy time in Angelina’s life when she lost her mother very young to breast cancer.

During filming, she admitted, “I thought about her a lot,” adding, “I also wore her ashes.”
