Queen star Sir Brian May made an emotional announcement alongside his bandmate Roger Taylor after their track Bohemian Rhapsody was voted Greatest Hits Radio listeners’ favourite song of the 70s, 80s and 90s. It marks the seventh time in a row the track topped the list of 500 songs chosen by voters, after 21,000 listeners had their say.
Now Brian has shared an emotional admission with fans, speaking out to say: “Thank you for voting Bohemian Rhapsody number one in your 500 top songs. It’s not the first time it’s happened, but we will never take this for granted, thank you.
“It’s great to be there in the centre of the pulse of music, so thank you for tuning in and thank you for staying with us.”
His bandmate, drummer Roger Taylor, chimed in: “We are continually amazed and delighted by the fact that people still seem to love our now very old song and we’re just delighted that it’s given a lot of pleasure to a lot of people over 50 years.”
He added of the 1975 hit: “We feel honoured and just continually thrilled, so thank you so much to anybody that voted it number one.”
In total, Queen had 13 songs make the top 500 list, while David Bowie and George Michael had 12. Sir Elton John had 10 tracks entered into the list.
Black Sabbath track Paranoid made the list for the first time this year after the tragic death of Ozzy Osbourne earlier this year, listed at 182 out of 500.
Kate Bush was the highest placed female solo artist with her track Wuthering Heights coming in at number three.
