The big day has finally arrived! After weeks and weeks of anticipation, easter eggs and fan sleuthing, Taylor Swift’s 12th album The Life Of A Showgirl is officially here.
Produced by Max Martin, Shellback & Taylor Swift, it is tasked with following up the monumental success of 2024’s The Tortured Poets Department.
The question everyone is asking, of course, is just how big can this record be?
The Life Of A Showgirl – the first album of new Swift music to arrive since she required the rights to her music – is already looking like the blockbuster of all blockbusters, and that’s without any songs even being issued ahead of its arrival. Prior to its release, Spotify announced that it has broken records with 5m pre-saves – with the DSP declaring it as the “most pre-saved album Countdown Page in Spotify history, surpassing the mark set By The Tortured Poets Department last year.”
Coupled with this, Swift is also doing more publicity than in recent years. Having first confirmed the album via an in-depth interview on Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, it has since been revealed Swift will be making key appearances on the The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Graham Norton Show, and Late Night With Seth Meyers.
Swift will also be kicking off a whole ‘Taylor Swift Weekend’ on Capital in the UK with interviews with Capital Breakfast, Hits Radio, and Magic Radio Breakfast.
This is in tandem with Swift taking over cinemas, with the Official Release Party Of A Showgirl being released in cinemas from 3-5 October 2025 in the UK.
TikTok, meanwhile, are marking the release with a month-long in-app experience for pre-release and a “limited-time fan activation at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles”.

What will it take to beat TTPD’s opening week in the UK?
Swift’s TTPD exploded to a No.1 UK debut on consumption of 270,091 units last year, in turn it was the fastest start of any album for more than seven years at the time, and the fastest of Taylor Swift’s career. It now stands on sales of 931,825 according to Official Charts Company data.
What opening week figures does TLOAS need to post to become the biggest of the year?
The biggest week one sale in the UK of 2025 so far goes to Polydor Label Group’s Sam Fender with People Watching. Released back in February, it opened its account on sales of 107,124, including 91,133 physical copies, 2,614 downloads and 13,377 sales-equivalent streams. The album – his third consecutive chart-topper – outsold the rest of the Top 10 combined. It’s the only album to date in the UK to top 100,000 in the opening week.
As far as non-domestic acts go, the biggest week one by an international artist goes to Sabrina Carpenter with Man’s Best Friend. Carpenter secured 85,305 units (12,911 CDs, 27,178 vinyl albums, 7,214 cassettes, 825 digital downloads and 37,177 sales-equivalent streams) in its first week. It’s worth noting, too, that of the 12 tracks on The Life Of A Showgirl, one that is sure to generate a mind-boggling amount of streams will be the title track, which features Sabrina Carpenter.
For an international artist, Swift’s TTPD was the biggest opening week in the UK since Scissor Sisters’ Ta-Dah, which moved 288,167 on debut in 2006.
What is the biggest-selling album of the year to date so far?
The best-selling album of 2025 so far actually belongs to a 2024 release: Sabrina Carpenter – Short N’ Sweet currently stands on sales of 443,496 unit for the year.
For context: The Tortured Poets Department accumulated more than 783,820 sales by the end of December 2024 – which was the most for any artist release in a calendar year since 2017. It was one of four albums by Swift to finish among the year’s 20 biggest titles (along with 1989 (Taylor’s Version), Lover and Folklore).

Overall, Swift’s best-selling album to date in the UK is the 6x platinum 1989, which stands on staggering sales of 1,927,425 in the UK to date according to OCC figures.
What about the singles charts?
We’ve spent a lot of time talking albums, but let’s not forget that one of the most exciting things about TLOAS is that it pairs Swift together with Max Martin and Shellback. Lest we forget, this is a combination that has previously yielded massive hits such as We Are Never Getting Back Together, 22, I Knew You Were Trouble, Shake It Off, Style, Wildest Dreams, Delicate and Ready For It?
Swift has delivered some big No.1s recently. In 2022, Anti-Hero shot to No.1 in the charts and stands on triple platinum sales of 2,364,894. More recently, The Tortured Poets Department served up a No.1 with Post Malone collaboration Fortnight reaching the top spot in 2024. It is on sales of 1,040,991.
As for the song to beat in order to become Swift biggest hit?
Despite never hitting No.1, Shake It Off is Swift’s best-selling UK single to date, on 5x platinum sales of 3,389,308. We already said who the creative team was behind that smash. If anyone can beat them it may well be, er, them…
What can Swift do for the music industry as a whole?
As previously reported, Swift’s return should offer a timely boost to the music industry. Recently, Music Week noted that, after years of consecutive quarterly growth, vinyl sales dipped by 2.8% year-on-year in Q2 of this year. Part of the problem being that 2025 was being compared to a 2024 quarter that saw Swift break streaming records with The Tortured Poets Department.
Notably, in its opening week, The Tortured Poets Department had physical sales of 180,236 (109,392 CDs, 66,388 vinyl albums, 4,457 cassettes), 10,948 downloads and 78,907 sales-equivalent streams.
Swift’s album also set a new UK record for vinyl sales in a week by any album in the 21st century. The previous record holder was her own Midnights, which opened with 61,948 vinyl sales in October 2022.
With TLOAS boasting several variants across vinyl, CD and cassette, we could well see new records being set in the unfurling super-fan phenomenon.
The GOAT
It should not be forgotten that this year has already actually seen Swift break a chart record. With the chart-topping result for Lover (Live From Paris), Swift secured her 13th UK No.1 and moved ahead of Madonna to become the female artist with the most No.1 albums in the UK ever.
As it currently stands – and before TLOAS debuts – Swift is already equal with Elvis Presley as the international artist with most No.1 albums in UK chart history. The Beatles and Robbie Williams currently have 15 each.
