Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has revealed Nancy Guthrie’s family has been ruled out of his investigation.
Speaking on February 16, Sheriff Nanos officially cleared the Guthrie family, stating that “all siblings and spouses” have been ruled out by law enforcement officials.
Following this revelation, several missing persons experts have come forward to explain how the police and FBI most likely cleared Nancy’s family. This comes after an ex-FBI agent revealed the hidden codeword that Savannah used in her message to the kidnappers.
Speaking to Page Six, former CIA member and FBI special agent Tracy Walder delved into the methods used by law enforcement when looking to clear loved ones during an investigation.
“Authorities have been able to alibi all of them and account for their whereabouts on that evening,” Tracy explained. “They look at their cell phone data and figure out if it matches up to where they were. They also use license plate scanners to see if they’re driving at the time and if they’re caught on cameras.”

The missing persons’ expert continued by saying that Sheriff Nanos can clear the Guthrie family “confidently,” if investigators used these means.
Additionally, Jason Pack, a retired FBI agent, explained how Sheriff Nanos’ statement is about “protecting” the gutheries, adding, “This statement appears to be about protecting a grieving family as much as it is about the investigation.
“It seems like they are confident in their work … alibis, phone records, financials, digital forensics, and the evidence has told them what they need to know.”
Furthermore, Jason believes Sheriff Nanos “seems to feel a real obligation to step in,” and that he is “trying to stop additional harm to victim families.”
In its full statement, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said, “To be clear … the Guthrie family – to include all siblings and spouses – has been cleared as possible suspects in this case. The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious, and are victims in this case. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel. The Guthrie family are victims plain and simple.”
This comes as Nancy Guthrie has been missing for two and a half weeks, with the 84-year-old being last seen on January 31 after she was dropped home following a family dinner.
In the past 18 days, media outlets have received four ransom notes regarding the case; however, these have not been confirmed yet as genuine.
Moreover, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings, Annie and Cameron, have reached out numerous times via Instagram videos, pleading with their mother’s captor to return Nancy to them.
In Savannah’s latest plea on Sunday, February 15, she begged, “I wanted to say to whoever has her, or who knows where she is, that it’s never too late. And you’re not lost, or alone, and it is never too late to do the right thing.”
Recently, law enforcement has released a video of a man tampering with Nancy’s home surveillance cameras before her disappearance. The individual is said to be 5 feet 9 or 5 feet 10 and has an “average build.”
