Oh, the magic of live television.
Veteran Survivor host Jeff Probst accidentally spoiled the results of Wednesday’s dramatic Survivor 50 finale during the live, three-hour telecast. (Warning: Major spoilers ahead.)
After a segment recorded months ago in Fjii that revealed which two contestants would make fire to win their way into the Final Three, Probst brought out castaways Rizo “The RizGod” Velovic for a live interview in front of the studio audience in Los Angeles.
The interview was meant to simply tease the upcoming fire-making challenge. But instead, the host ended the interview pointing to an empty seat next to the rest of the voted out cast members, patted Velovic’s back, and announced, “Rizo, you become the final member of our jury. Take a spot over here.”
Probst began to described the crew of eliminated contestants as those whose “games fell a little short, but this is the group that’s going to figure out….” He seemingly was going to say “who will win the $2 million prize and title of Soul Survivor,” but before he could finish, hushed chatter and shocked looks prompted him to exclaim, “What just happened?”
Survivor fan favorite Cirie Fields explained “fire hasn’t happened yet,” while season 45 winner Dee Valladares just told Probst to “keep going, keep going.” None of it seemed to register to the host, who just went to the pre-planned commercial break.
“So, I love doing live television,” Probst joked when the finale returned. “In case you’re confused, this is what happened: We were going to show you fire-making, and then have the loser of fire making, Rizo, come out and talk about how charming he is and if he had practiced fire-making, maybe he would have won. Instead, we did a Survivor twist. It’s the last twist of the season!”
Probst then intro’d the segment he’d inadvertently spoiled, hypping up the audience to “watch Rizo lose.”
