Lady Gaga says she is “really lucky to be alive” after suffering a psychotic mental health crisis and taking lithium while filming the hit movie A Star Is Born.
The 39-year-old pop star, born Stefani Germanotta, said she was on the mood-stabilising medicine while working on the film that earned her an Oscar win for her song Shallow and a best actress nomination, but was later admitted to hospital.
Her mental health declined so much that the Abracadabra singer was forced to cancel her Joanne world tour in February 2018.
The crisis also preceded her headlining set during Super Bowl LI in Houston in February 2017.
“I did A Star Is Born on lithium. There was one day that my sister said to me, ‘I don’t see my sister anymore’,” she told Rolling Stone, where she features on the cover.
“And I cancelled the tour. There was one day, I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. I needed to take a break. I couldn’t do anything.
“I completely crashed. It was really scary. There was a time where I didn’t think I could get better.”
Gaga, who is currently on her Mayhem Ball US and Europe tour, said she eventually recovered from her mental health issues and now considers herself “a healthy, whole person.”
“I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go,” she added.
The New York native also credited her wellness to being in the care of her fiancé, Michael Polansky, whom she plans to wed and start a family with.
“Being in love with someone that cares about the real me made a very big difference. How do you learn how to be yourself with someone when you don’t know how to be yourself with anyone?” she said.
“Being a mum is the thing I want the most, and he’s gonna be a beautiful father. We’re really excited about that.”
Polansky told the magazine they aim to have their wedding either during the Mayhem Ball tour or shortly after it ends.
