On Saturday, October 11, people were stunned to learn acting legend Diane Keaton died at age 79 from undisclosed health issues. Famous for roles in The Godfather, Annie Hall, The First Wives Club, and many more films, the late actress also had the chance to star with a plethora of stars throughout her career.
One particular person Diane worked with was Gilmore Girls alum Lauren Graham, when they both starred in the 2007 film Because I Said So. While the two never appeared together on film again, Lauren remembered her former co-star with a poignant note on how Diane encouraged her to pursue other avenues in her work life. What’s more, she included a note Diane sent her, cementing just how influential the actress was in her becoming a published author.
“A few lines from a letter Diane Keaton wrote me years ago, when writing a book was just a dream of mine,” Lauren wrote on Instagram on October 13. “Her work as an actor was an inspiration to me. Her encouragement changed my life.”
Given the impact Diane seemingly had on Lauren’s life, many took to social media to console her after the loss.
“I just watched Because I Said So last night as my tribute. ❤️❤️❤️,” one person wrote in the comments. “What a beautiful letter, truly a treasure. You big winner you 🥺♥️,” another penned. “Sending all my love to you, Lauren. The one who encouraged you to write will forever remain in your heart and in your work. Folks may remember that in Because I Said So, Diane played Daphne, a single mom who was a bit too invested in her daughters’ personal lives. Lauren portrayed Daphne’s oldest daughter Maggie, while Piper Perabo and Mandy Moore played Mae and Milly respectively. Mandy also paid tribute to her and Lauren’s movie mom with her own message on Instagram.
“They say don’t meet your heroes, but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mom’ for a few months,” she wrote on the day of Diane’s death. “An honor of a lifetime. What an incandescent human Di is and was. I am so sad she’s gone for all the reasons but also because it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones.”
