Being the Queen of Pop may not always be as effortless as Madonna usually makes it seem. On an episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, the 67-year-old pop superstar shared the near-death experience she had in 2023.

She recalled how she contracted a bacterial infection while rehearsing for her Celebration tour. “One minute, I was alive and dancing around, and the next minute, I was in the [intensive care] unit of a hospital, and I woke up from being unconscious for four days,” she said.

After she was taken off the ventilator and sent home, she developed sepsis, which is often deadly.

“It can kill you,” she explained. Sepsis is an extreme reaction to the presence of harmful microorganisms in the blood or other tissues, leading to the body shutting down.

The singer was stunned by how quickly her health diminished. “I had no strength,” she recalled. “I had no energy.”

The next period of her life, thus, was dedicated to healing from the inside out.

“I used to talk to my teacher all the time and he was like, ‘The sooner you accept what’s happening to you and that you don’t know when it’s going to end, the sooner it’s going to end,'” she said.

In late June that year, Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, stated that the singer had “developed a serious bacterial infection, which led to a several-day stay in the ICU.”

“Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care,” Oseary shared at the time. “A full recovery is expected. At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.”

The Celebration tour was expected to cover all aspects of Madonna’s prolific career, and was slated to begin in Vancouver in July 15.
