Former Smiths frontman Morrissey canceled two of his United States shows due to a threat against his life, according to one of the venues he was set to perform at.
Officials became aware of a “credible threat on Morrissey’s life” in the past few days and opted to cancel his Saturday, Sept. 20, show “out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and band,” the MGM Music Hall at Fenway confirmed on Instagram.
The “Suedehead” singer’s concert at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, scheduled for Friday evening, Sept. 19, was also canceled.
The English musician’s official Facebook page assured ticket holders that they would be refunded automatically and wrote, “We appreciate your understanding.”
A 26-year-old Ottawa man reportedly made a threat against the 66-year-old artist on a Bluesky social media post on Sept. 4, according to the Ottawa Citizen.

Cancellations come after recent assassinations in US
The cancellation comes after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University’s campus earlier this month.
Other assassinations that occurred within the past year include the June 14 fatal shootings of Democratic Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, as well as the Dec. 4, 2024, killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
In September, Morrissey began touring across North America with stops in Montreal, Canada and New York City.
The status of upcoming shows in Philadelphia (Sept. 23), Pittsburgh (Sept. 25) and Chicago (Sept. 27) is unclear as of Saturday, Sept. 20.
USA TODAY has reached out to Morrissey’s representatives for comment, but has not received a response.
Morrissey canceled show in Stockholm earlier this year
In June, the singer cancelled a show in Stockholm after criticizing a lack of “music industry support” for his European solo tour.
“The pain at not reaching Stockholm this week is horrific for the band and crew,” he wrote on his website, Morrissey Central. “I know it’s impossible for people to understand, but we dream of Stockholm, Reykjavik, Trondheim, Helsinki, Aarhus … but there is no financial support from imaginary record labels to get us to such places.”
