NEED TO KNOW

  • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the annual Academy Awards ceremony will be held at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater beginning in 2029

  • The ceremony has been held at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard since 2001

  • The Oscars will also be broadcast on YouTube for the first time in 2029

The Academy Awards are not just moving to YouTube in 2029; the whole ceremony is moving outside of Hollywood.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and entertainment company AEG announced on Thursday, March 26 that AEG’s sports and entertainment complex L.A. Live will physically host the Oscars from 2029 through 2039. The ceremony will be held in a venue currently known as Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, next door to Crypto.com Arena and the L.A. Convention Center.

The move marks a turn away from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, which is located on Hollywood Boulevard and has hosted the Academy Awards since 2001. According to a press release, the awards show will continue to be held at the Dolby Theatre and televised on ABC through the 100th Oscars ceremony in 2028. The following year, the ceremony will be held in downtown L.A. and broadcast on YouTube for the first time.

“We are thrilled to partner with a global powerhouse like AEG. Their track record for building and operating technologically sophisticated live performance venues is unrivaled,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor said in a March 26 statement. “For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make L.A. LIVE the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema, both for our live in-theater audience and for film fans around the world.”

The Academy previously announced its new partnership with YouTube, which runs between 2029 and 2033, in December 2025. All coverage of the Oscars, from red carpet and behind-the-scenes content, as well as the annual Governors Ball will all be available to stream on YouTube during that time period.

The Oscars have been held in a number of locations over the decades: the awards show was originally held Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles for its first 16 years, according to the Dolby Theatre’s official website.

The 16th annual Academy Awards took place at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, which also stands on Hollywood Boulevard; the ceremony has also taken place at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, the RKO Pantages Theater, the NBC International Theater in New York City and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of the Music Center of Los Angeles County, among other locations, per the Dolby Theatre’s website.

Conan O’Brien hosted the Oscars over the last two years: One Battle After Another won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, at this year’s ceremony on March 15, while Sinners won four awards. The 98th annual Oscars also introduced the first-ever Best Casting award, which went to One Battle After Another‘s casting director Cassandra Kulukundis.
