Rick Astley has disclosed that his daughter Emilie has no intentions of pursuing a career in music like her famous father, opting instead to follow her grandfather’s path.
While acknowledging she enjoys a comfortable upbringing yet remains grounded, he shared that she received some musical education.
“She learnt to play the drums and sings pretty much bang on tune, but she didn’t want to go that way professionally,” he said. “I would have supported her if that’s what she wanted, but I’m relieved she didn’t choose it.” It comes as fans learn why Bob Dylan almost quit music.
Rather, Rick indicated that his daughter, his only child who holds an MA in Fine Art, has chosen a career in horticulture — mirroring his own father’s profession, reports the Express.
Emilie, who adopts her mother’s maiden name rather than Astley, operates her own garden design business.
“My dad had a very small garden centre, so I grew up repotting plants after school and never wanted to see a plant ever again – it skipped a generation,” Rick shared.
He went on to clarify that she is extremely conscious about nepotism, which explains why she doesn’t use his last name.
“When one of your parents is famous, I think a lot of people raise an eyebrow and say that’s why you are successful, but I can’t really help her with the gardening world,” he told Sunday Times in a joint interview with Emilie.
Though he may not be equipped to assist with her professional endeavors, he confessed to feeling “super proud” when she participated in the Chelsea Flower Show last year. The interview comes just under two months after Rick earned widespread acclaim for his performance on the Pyramid stage at the Glastonbury Festival, with some viewers declaring he outshone the Arctic Monkeys.
Ahead of his appearance, he told NME he was feeling “quite nervous” about it, though he said he was “looking forward to it” and described it as “a rite of passage” for musicians, following his originally scheduled set being pushed back due to the pandemic.
He also conceded that he, “would get lynched” if he failed to perform Never Gonna Give You Up. “It’s part of my DNA and who I am,” he intimated.
“I never play it with a grimace, because those songs are the only reason I even get a hint of playing Glastonbury,” he acknowledged. “I’m not daft enough to fool myself into thinking otherwise. I relish those songs. They’re my suit of armor.”
