Taylor Swift’s little black dress is causing quite a lot of fandom discourse. Last night, the showgirl stepped out in New York City for dinner with her mom, Andrea, and brother, Austin. Her latest in a string of appearances—first in London, and now back on her home turf—she was seen leaving the West Village’s Eighty Six in a crystal-embellished Valentino minidress.
But the piece, with its sparkling spaghetti straps, bow neckline, and black crepe body, not only drew attention for its dazzling accents—but, like most things Swift does, for its potential hidden meaning.
While reputation fans held fast to the familiar hues, hoping the black color could signify that the album’s lost vault tracks might be in our future, others noted a connection to a lyric from “Tim McGraw.” And with her debut single turning 20 years old this June (the 19th, to be exact), we’re placing our bets on that theory.
“When you think happiness, I hope you think that little black dress,” Swift sang nearly two decades ago, in the chorus of her first-ever single. The year was 2006, and in mere months the curly-haired country princess would release her debut, self-titled album. In the 20 years since, she has gone on to put out an additional 11 studio albums, re-record four, win 14 Grammys, buy back her masters, and embark on the generation-defining Eras Tour. But she’s not one to forget her roots, and if these Easter eggs are any indication, Swifties are hopeful she might be planning something for the anniversary.
Swift wore the LBD with peep-toe crystal Christian Louboutin heels and an asymmetrical black leather bag from Aupen. She pulled her hair into a messy bun and painted her lips with her classic red.
