Many actors have successfully taken a step behind the camera to direct a film or television episode. They’re probably the best people in the entertainment biz to take on the role of director. Actors such as Kenneth Branagh, Kevin Costner, and Clint Eastwood have probably had just as much success, if not more, behind the camera as they’ve had in front of it.
Let’s not forget the fairer sex! Female actors have had just as much success as directors as their male counterparts. Jodie Foster, Barbra Streisand, Greta Gerwig, and Elizabeth Banks are just a few of the actresses/directors out there. Another is Robin Wright.
Best known for her roles in The Princess Bride and Forrest Gump, Wright has carved out a long career in front of the camera with memorable turns in House of Cards, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Wonder Woman. Wright currently stars in Prime Video’s The Girlfriend, but also donned the director’s cap for the first three episodes of the series. What was it like for her co-stars to be directed by their fellow actor?
The Girlfriend is a limited series on Prime Video that follows Laura (Robin Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all: a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson). Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry (Olivia Cooke), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective.
Parade asked Laurie Davidson, who plays Wright’s son, Daniel, in the series, about what it was like working with and being directed by Wright. “It was amazing to work with Robin as director and co-star,” he said. “I’ve grown up watching her work both as a director and an actor, and what struck me was how amazingly she moved between the two. You know, it was a complete seamless transition. It was a really cool experience.”
For Olivia Cooke, who plays “The Girlfriend” Cherry in the series, the sentiment was simiilar. “It was incredible watching her not only pull off one of the most emotional layered performances, but then also just snap back to being a director,” says the House of the Dragon star.
The Girlfriend premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 10 on Prime Video.
