Donald Trump’s ex-wife, Marla Maples, admitted their divorce was “such a painful time” in her life as she also said she prays for the President.
The former couple, whose relationship became public while Trump was still married to his first wife, Ivana, tied the knot at New York‘s Plaza Hotel in a lavish ceremony with over 1,000 guests in December 1993 – two months after their daughter, Tiffany Trump, was born.
They were married from 1993 to 1999 – and during their divorce proceedings, which began in 1997, Trump met his future third wife, Melania Knauss.
In an interview with The New York Times in 2012, Marla spoke about her struggles while separating from her ex-husband and facing scrutiny from the press.
She revealed, “It was such a painful time. All those years in the press pretty much ripped my heart out.”
While divorcing Trump, Marla decided to take her daughter, who was five at the time, to Los Angeles because she wanted a fresh start and also wanted Tiffany “to grow up in a place where her name wouldn’t make her such a standout, and where we wouldn’t be followed around.”
However Marla, now 61, decided to return to New York in the fall of 2012. At the time, her daughter was going to college and Marla reflected that she hadn’t seen her father much throughout the years.
“But now, she wants to get to know him better,” Marla revealed.
The singer and TV personality previously admitted in an interview that she thought she “could change” Trump, but added that after a few years she realized they were just too different.
Marla now focuses on health and wellness. She describes herself as a “mostly-vegan” person who avoids dairy, eats organic and chooses to be gluten-free. She also joined Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’ Children’s Health Defense.
Last month, she took to Instagram to share a touching message for her ex while visiting one of her favorite spiritual spots, St. John’s Church in D.C.
She said in the video, “I just left St John’s Church, one of my favorites, where I did a prayer for our President and for our nation.”
She added, “For more light might be exposed and that we cling to the divine and all that we do and believe good will prevail and we bring more joy to the world.”
