Scottish actress Sharon Rooney is one of the 21 famous faces set to be taking part in the second series of BBC’s Celebrity Traitors which begins filming this weekend
The second series of Celebrity Traitors is set to get underway with the full line-up announced – and it includes Sharon Rooney. Fans won’t have to wait too much longer for the latest stars to entertain them in the Highlands castle.
As the famous faces touch down for filming, the Scottish actress is among the 21-strong lineup. Fans will know her best from her critically acclaimed breakout role as Rae Earl in My Mad Fat Diary. She portrayed the role between 2013 and 2015 and took viewers on a journey as a teen dealing with mental health and body image issues.
Other performances have came in the likes of Miss Atlantis in Dumbo in 2019, and on the small screen, she has featured in productions such as The Revenge Club, The Control Room, Nightsleeper, and Finding Alice. The star was also highly praised for her comedic performance as prisoner Catherine in Daddy Issues, opposite Aimee Lou Wood and David Morrissey.

The 37-year-old’s career has gone from strength to strength since. In 2023, she landed the gig as Lawyer Barbie in the hit movie about the famous doll, while the performance was brief, she told Tatler at the time that it was a ‘dream come true’.
“Honestly it sounds like such a cliché but it really was a dream,’ says Rooney. ‘I was a Barbie kid. Growing up I had the bedcover, the lampshade, the wallpaper. I used to get the Argos catalogue every Christmas and circle around the dolls I wanted. So the first day we went on set it was unreal – I played with one of those doll houses when I was a little girl and now I am in one. Every detail was perfect.”
Her performances have been praised thanks to her down-to-earth screen presence. And recent years have seen her become a familiar face on British TV. The star will be hoping go far in the contest to continue her rise in the industry.
She shared the announcement video on her social media, but left no comment. Fans were quick to praise her inclusion, though.
On Twitter/X, one user wrote: “Sharon Rooney on Celebrity Traitors?! How am I supposed to be normal about this?!?!” Another added: “omg sharon rooney. perhaps a ‘my mad fat diary’ rewatch in her honor is needed again in my life.”
“SHARON!! ROONEY!! I’m so bloody excited,” gushed another. While a fourth wrote: “Sharon Rooney jumps out as a potential surprise star to me.”
The latest series of Celebrity Traitors will see the famous faces battle it out to win a cash prize of up to £100,000 for their chosen charities. Alongside Sharon will be the likes of former Little Mix star Leigh-Anne Pinnock and actor Michael Sheen.
Richard E Grant will also be in the castle, as will Jerry Hall and Miranda Hart. Completing the lineup is BBC presenter Amol Rajan, The Last of Us actress Bella Ramsey and comedian James Acaster – not to be mixed up with You’re Beautiful singer James Blunt, who has also signed.
Comedy stars Joanne McNally and Joe Lycett, former Corrie legend Julie Hesmondhalgh and social media content creator King Kenny will be in the castle alongside Love Island presenter Maya Jama, Industry actress Myha’la and BBC maths guru Professor Hannah Fry
Rob Beckett and his TV sidekick Romesh Ranganathan will be flanked by former EastEnders star Ross Kemp plus Game of Thrones actor Sebastian Croft.
