Winona Ryder has captivated audiences over the years with her performances in gothic classics like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, as well as dramas such as Little Women and Autumn in New York.
However, her journey hasn’t been without controversy, particularly involving fellow actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
Ryder and Paltrow were fast friends in the 1990s, and the Hollywood press hailed them as the “it” girls of the decade.
After ending her high-profile relationship with Johnny Depp in 1993, Ryder began socializing with Paltrow, who was making a name for herself in films like Seven and Emma.
By the mid-1990s, they were close friends – but their friendship was about to take a dramatic turn.
Whatever the truth, Paltrow succeeded in landing the coveted role. To add insult to injury, the movie became such a massive hit that it snagged seven Oscars – including a Best Actress trophy for Paltrow herself.
Naturally, this alleged backstabbing spelled the end of Ryder and Paltrow’s friendship, with the pair quickly becoming estranged. Years down the line, she vehemently denied any wrongdoing against Ryder.
When pressed on Sirius XM in 2015 about whether she had “stolen” the script, Paltrow fired back.
She declared: “That’s an urban myth. I swear to god I did not, I’m raising my right hand on the bible. I swear to god.”
Prior to that confrontation, Paltrow had made it crystal clear in 2009 that her friendship with Ryder was ancient history when she took a swipe at an unnamed former pal in her Goop newsletter.
According to Lainey Gossip, she penned: “Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy’ who, as it turned out, was pretty hell-bent on taking me down.”
Paltrow allegedly went on: “This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous. I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road.”
The actress then dropped some hints that may have suggested she was referring to Ryder all along.
She penned: “But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and… happiness. There went the high road.”
This particular newsletter was published just a few years after Ryder’s 2001 shoplifting arrest.
The star of Stranger Things was found guilty of stealing $5,000 worth of designer clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills.
She later discussed the incident, stating: “Psychologically, I must have been at a place where I just wanted to stop. I won’t get into what happened, but it wasn’t what people think. And it wasn’t like the crime of the century!”.
In 2015, Paltrow disclosed that she hadn’t spoken to Ryder for “years”.
