Zahara, the daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, dropped her father’s surname during her college graduation ceremony.
The 21 year old received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Spelman College on Sunday, May 17. Zahara is the eldest among Angelina and Brad’s six children, which include Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Shiloh, 19, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 17.
Although the commencement program listed her name as Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt, it was not announced in full when she took to the stage to collect her diploma. Instead, she was introduced as “Zahara Marley Jolie.” This is not the first occasion her name has been publicly announced without the Pitt suffix, and she is not alone among her siblings in distancing herself from their father’s name.
The psychology graduate had also used solely her mother’s last name at the Pearls of Purpose Foundation’s Dearest Mother and Daughter: A Most Delightful Brunch Experience event back in April.
Both Zahara and Angelina attended as special guests, with the foundation’s Instagram post referring to her simply as Zahara Jolie. At the gathering, Zahara delivered a heartfelt speech praising the actress-director, speaking warmly of their “unique, almost kindred, relationship.”
She expressed that she is “grateful to have had a role model to show me what it looks like to be a decent human being” and acknowledged her parent for instilling values of “helping others, being kind and always striving for growth as people” in both herself and her siblings. In November 2023, Zahara joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at the historically Black, women’s college and she identified herself as Zahara Marley Jolie during the induction ceremony.
Several of Zahara’s siblings have similarly distanced themselves from the Pitt surname, whether through legal channels or personal preference.
Shiloh formally dropped Pitt from her name in 2024. The teenager submitted the request following her 18th birthday in May 2024, which was approved in August of that year. The dancer now goes by Shiloh Nouvel Jolie following the legally granted name change.
Vivienne’s departure from the 62-year-old film producer’s last name came to light in 2024, when she was credited as “Vivienne Jolie” in the Playbill for The Outsiders musical. Vivienne served as a production assistant on the Broadway show, for which her mother was a producer.
Most recently, Maddox became the latest of Angelina and Brad’s children to shed the Pitt surname. He served as assistant director on the film Couture, which stars his 50 year old mother.
The drama opened in French movie theaters on February 18, with the end credits listing Maddox as Maddox Jolie.
Couture made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025. At that time, production notes distributed to journalists also referenced him as Maddox Jolie.
