Alan Rickman’s private diaries were released back in 2022 – six years after he tragically died aged 69 from pancreatic cancer.
In his writing, Alan shared a number of revelations, including how he really felt about his role as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film franchise. He also touched on battling a secret cancer diagnosis and how ill it made him while filming. Having quietly fought the disease with only his nearest and dearest aware, the actor’s most personal reflections recorded in his journals are now being revealed in Madly, Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman. Within them, Alan disclosed why he chose to reprise the role of Severus Snape for the fifth Harry Potter film following his diagnosis.
In an exclusive excerpt published by The Guardian, Alan stated he “finally” committed to returning to the fantasy franchise for Order of the Phoenix.
“Finally, yes to HP 5 [Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix],” he said. “The sensation is neither up nor down. The argument that wins is the one that says: ‘See it through. It’s your story.'”
Several months afterwards, he documented an entry from the film’s set, describing how he had become less communicative.
“I realise as soon as that [Snape’s] ring and costume go on – something happens,” Alan wrote.

“It becomes alien to be chatty, smiley, open. The character narrows me down, tightens me up. Not good qualities on a film set. I have never been less communicative with a crew.
“Fortunately, Dan [Radcliffe] fills that role with ease and charm. And youth.”
After completing the final Harry Potter book, Deathly Hallows, he expressed his views in a diary entry dated 27 July 2007.
“… I have finished reading the last Harry Potter book. Snape dies heroically, Potter describes him to his children as one of the bravest men he ever knew and calls his son Albus Severus,” he noted.
“This was a genuine rite of passage. One small piece of information from Jo Rowling seven years ago – Snape loved Lily – gave me a cliff edge to hang on to.”
