Many Colombian celebrities were not born into wealth, instead coming from humble backgrounds. Despite facing economic and social challenges, their talent, dedication, and perseverance has allowed them to overcome adversity and achieve success. From rags to riches, here are impactful stories of Colombian celebrities who rose from poverty.

From rags to riches: Inspiring stories of Colombian celebrities

Juan Guillermo Cuadrado (Football)

Colombian footballer Juan Guillermo Cuadrado is an example of perseverance. He was born in Necocli, Antioquia, and from a young age, he faced not only poverty but also violence. At the age of four, he lost his father, who was murdered in front of their house. From that moment on, his mother became the family’s breadwinner, working on a banana plantation. Years later, his family moved from Necoclí to Apartado, a nearby town, in search of greater peace. It was there that Cuadrado began playing football in the streets.

At the age of 12, he enrolled in the Manchester Football Club school in Apartado. Although many doubted that he could become a professional footballer due to his height, Cuadrado proved that his talent surpassed any physical limitations. After playing for Manchester and Club Atlético Urabá, he continued his career in Rionegro, in Colombia’s Second Division, until he finally made his professional debut with Independiente Medellin. He later joined the Colombian national team, where he became one of the country’s most prominent athletes. Currently, Cuadrado plays for Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio and remains a key player for the Colombian national team.

Ryan Castro (Music)

Brayan David Castro Sosa, known as Ryan Castro, demonstrated a passion for music from an early age and dreamed of becoming a singer. At 17, he began singing on buses to support his family financially. He worked tirelessly to make it in the music world, often sleeping in the recording studio and temporarily moving to Aruba. His breakthrough finally came in 2017 with the single Morena, but it wasn’t until 2020 that he signed with a major record label. Today, he is one of reggaeton’s most popular artists.

Nairo Quintana (Cycling)

Nairo Quintana grew up in a humble family in the village of La Concepcion, located in the municipality of Combita. From a young age, he faced significant financial difficulties. His father, Luis Quintana, suffered a serious accident that left him incapacitated, which forced Nairo and his siblings to contribute to the family’s income. He used a bicycle as a means of transportation, and over time, this turned into his passion. His talent and perseverance led him to join the Ediciones Mar Sports Club in Tunja, where he began his career as an amateur cyclist.

In 2010, Quintana turned professional with the 4-72 Colombia team and quickly stood out as a climber. Throughout his career, he has achieved numerous successes, including victories in the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España. Today, he is one of the country’s most important cyclists.

Yerry Mina (Sports)

Yerry Mina was born in Guachene, Cauca, a region marked by poverty and armed conflict. From an early age, he faced many challenges, growing up in a humble family. His father, Eulises Mina, was a goalkeeper, and his uncle, Arley Mina, was the first footballer from Guachene to reach professional teams. From a young age, Yerry showed a great passion for football.

At the age of 18, he made his professional debut with Deportivo Pasto in 2013. Later, he played for Independiente Santa Fe, where he won the Copa Sudamericana in 2015. His discipline, talent, and perseverance led him to become one of the most important players for the Colombian national team. In addition to playing for the national team, Mina currently plays for Cagliari Calcio.

Luis Diaz (Football)

The journey of Colombian footballer Luis Diaz, which is characterized by discipline and overcoming diversity, inspires many young Colombians. Born into a low-income Wayuu family, Diaz often had nothing to eat and faced violence and insecurity from a young age. However, having discovered his passion for football early on, his family supported him in his dream to become a professional. Thanks to his discipline and dedication, he overcame many challenges to become one of Colombia’s most outstanding footballers. Today, he plays for Liverpool football team, in the U.K., as well as for the Colombian national team.

Yuberjen Martinez (Boxing)

Yuberjen Martinez was born in the municipality of Turbo, Antioquia. Before dedicating himself to boxing, he worked as a craftsman and mechanic to help support his family. His passion for boxing began when he moved to the municipality of Chigorodó, where he started developing his skills in the sport. Throughout his career, Martínez faced many challenges, but thanks to his dedication and effort, he qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he won a silver medal in the light flyweight category. This achievement made him one of the most important athletes in the country.

Juanes (Music)

Colombian rocker Juanes was born into a very humble family and made many sacrifices to music, which he originally learnt from his siblings. While studying at university, he decided to move to the United States in search of better opportunities in music. However, his first two years abroad were tough: he did not have a permanent home and had so little money that he would survive on just one sandwich a day, eating one half for lunch and the other half for dinner. Eventually, his efforts paid off, and his life changed completely when he signed with Universal Music. Today, he is one of the most successful and wealthy Colombian celebrities.

Caterine Ibargüen (Athletics)

Colombian athlete Caterine Ibargüen was born in the municipality of Apartadó, Antioquia. Like many other Colombian athletes, she had to overcome various challenges to achieve success. She grew up in a humble family and was raised by her grandmother, as her parents separated due to the armed conflict in the Urabá region. Ibargüen found an escape and an opportunity to succeed through sports.

Initially, she practiced volleyball, but at the age of twelve, she turned to athletics. Her talent and determination led her to move to Medellín, where she continued her training at the Antonio Roldán Betancur Sports Village. There, she specialized in high jump, later transitioning to triple jump and long jump. Today, she is one of Colombia’s most outstanding athletes. Over the course of her career, she has won multiple world championships and in 2018 was recognized as the “Female Athlete of the Year” by the IAAF.

Blessd (Music)

When Stevin Mesa Londoño, known as Blessd, first entered the music industry, he didn’t have the money to cover his initial productions. Instead, he had to pay for them in installments with money he earned from selling sweets at local markets. He also juggled his musical endeavors with study, working from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. before going to school. His life changed in 2019 when one of his songs went viral on social media. Gradually, he gained recognition, started collaborating with major artists such as Maluma, and went on to establish himself as one of the leading figures in today’s urban music scene.
